Cosplay costumes are not like normal clothing. They tend to be made of different materials and require special care when washing. In this post, we'll share some tips on how to wash your cosplay costume to keep it looking its best.

Check the Fabric

Before washing your cosplay costume, it's important to check the fabric. Different materials require different cleaning methods.

  • Most of our school or military uniforms made of gabardine, twill, thick satin, or spandex, are best washed by hand. PU leather belts and accessories also require hand washing. Please note that these items should be washed in low temperature or cold water.
  • When washing spandex fabric, it is recommended to put it in a mesh bag and avoid washing it together with velcro tape. Additionally, costumes made of sequin fabric or any other garments with sequins should not be washed.
  • PU leather should not be washed in a washing machine.
  • EVA/PVC accessories are non-washable.

If you're afraid water will stain or destroy the costume, you have the option to dry clean it as well.

Hand wash

To hand wash your cosplay costume, follow these steps:

  1. Fill a basin or sink with cool water and add a small amount of detergent. Use about a teaspoon of detergent for smaller garments and basins, and a tablespoon for larger loads.
  2. Submerge the costume piece in the basin and let it soak through. Swirl it around in the water for a few minutes, being careful not to stretch the fabric.
  3. Let the garment soak for 5-10 minutes. If it's particularly dirty, you may want to repeat steps 2 and 3.
  4. Rinse off the fabric in running water until the detergent is washed off.
  5. Be careful not to stretch or wring the fabric in the process. Gently squeeze the fabric to remove excess water.
  6. Place your costume piece on a dry towel. Gently roll the towel with the garment inside to release some of the water. Then unroll the towel and allow the costume to dry naturally.
  7. Once it has finished drying, you will probably have to iron or steam the costume to remove any wrinkles.

By following these steps, you can keep your cosplay costume looking its best for years to come.

PU Leather

⚠︎ PU Leather, if not stained, it is strongly recommended not to clean it! ⚠︎

  • For maintenance: Gently wipe the surface of the synthetic leather with clean water to keep it clean.
  • Treating stains: If there are stains on the surface of the synthetic leather, you can use a soft cotton cloth dipped in a small amount of clean water or diluted soapy water to gently wipe the stains. After wiping, make sure to let the leather surface air dry naturally and avoid using excessive water.
  • Avoid chemicals: Never use cleaning agents, solvents, shine enhancers, or wax oils containing chemicals to clean synthetic leather, as these products may cause the leather to become stiff, fade, and shorten its lifespan.
  • Keep at an appropriate temperature: Synthetic leather is not suitable for exposure to extremely high or low temperatures. Prolonged exposure to sunlight or high-temperature environments can cause synthetic leather to deform or crack. On the other hand, placing it in a damp or cold environment can also cause synthetic leather to become stiff. Therefore, please ensure that your synthetic leather is kept in an appropriate temperature environment.

Proper cleaning, appropriate temperature, maintenance, avoiding heavy pressure, and proper storage are also important. The correct cleaning and maintenance methods can prolong the lifespan of cosplay costumes and keep them looking beautiful.
